Calum’s work spans a range of areas, including new formulations, industrial processes, novel functional materials, and renewable technologies. He has experience in Australian and New Zealand patent prosecution, patent drafting, infringement and validity advice, and assisting in the development of IP strategy.
Calum was awarded his PhD in Chemistry from Monash University, where his research focused on the rational design and synthesis of novel molecules for stimulus-responsive self-assembly systems. Following completion of his PhD, he worked as a product development chemist in the surface coatings industry before joining FB Rice. His combination of academic and industry experience gives him a strong appreciation of the considerations involved when commercialising scientific research. During his Master of Intellectual Property Law studies, he was the recipient of the Ray Hind Prize for achieving the highest mark in Interpretation and Validity of Patents at The University of Melbourne.
Calum is passionate about science and is focused on assisting in the transformation of new research into IP assets that advance the commercial interests of his clients.
